One in Four Using Investments to Help Family and Friends

A survey of over 1500 investors by AJ Bell in December showed that a quarter of those surveyed had either already withdrawn money to help financially support family or friends (15%) or were thinking about it (a further 10%).
76% had gifted sums over £2000.
Unsurprisingly the most common reason for this was to help family members get on the property ladder. 17% had made the gift towards a house deposit and a further 12% were supporting mortgage costs.
Other reasons included helping with a one-off expense, such as replacing a car or boiler (17%), helping pay bills like household utilities (9%), educational costs (6%) or rent (3%).
22% were gifts for no specific purpose and the practice of gifting may become more popular as inheritance tax allowances continue to be squeezed under the new budget, especially if pensions are brought under the inheritance tax regime from 2027 as proposed.
If you are concerned about inheritance tax, or interested in increasing the amount you gift we strongly recommend you contact us for advice on how to do this in the most tax effective manner.
There are a lot more issues to consider when making a gift then you might realise, so it is always worth a conversation with us first.
